Best Free-to-Play Games on Steam in October 2025: Worth Your Time or Just Cash Grabs?
Steam’s free-to-play section is a minefield. For every legitimately great game, there are ten asset flips and predatory cash grabs trying to empty your wallet. I spent the last few weeks diving into the most-played F2P titles on Steam right now, and I’ve got opinions on what’s actually worth your time in October 2025.
The Competitive Shooters That Don’t Suck
Counter-Strike 2

Still king of the hill. CS2’s October update finally fixed some of the hitbox issues that plagued the summer months, and the new Anubis rework plays way better than the original version. If you’re coming from CS:GO, the transition takes maybe 10-15 hours to feel natural again. The skill ceiling is insane, the community is toxic as hell, but nothing else scratches that tactical shooter itch quite like it.
Monetization is purely cosmetic—skins, cases, stickers. You can grind forever without spending a dime and be on equal footing with someone who dropped $5000 on a Karambit. That’s the way it should be.
The Finals
Embark’s destruction-based shooter is still going strong eight months post-launch. The October season added a new map set in Seoul with some genuinely creative vertical gameplay. Light/Medium/Heavy class balance feels pretty good right now, though Heavy is maybe slightly overtuned in ranked.
The battle pass is $10 and honestly optional—all gameplay content is free, cosmetics are where they make money. Fair model, fun game, runs well on mid-range hardware. If you want something faster and more chaotic than CS2, this is it.
MMOs and Live Service Games
Lost Ark

Still pulling decent numbers, though the Western playerbase has definitely shrunk since launch hype. If you’re starting fresh in October 2025, you’ve got a mountain of content to catch up on, but Smilegate has been pretty generous with catch-up mechanics. You can realistically hit endgame in 2-3 weeks of casual play now.
Pay-to-win concerns are real but overblown—yes, whales progress faster, but skill still matters more than gear in most content. The recent October raid is genuinely challenging and well-designed. Just don’t expect to compete on leaderboards without either insane hours or a credit card.
Warframe

Digital Extremes keeps pumping out content updates, and the October addition of the new Duviri paradox story expansion is wild. If you bounced off Warframe years ago because the new player experience was confusing as hell, it’s… still confusing, but slightly better now.
Free-to-play model is fair—you can grind everything, or you can pay platinum to skip grind. Trading between players exists, so you can earn premium currency without spending real money if you’re patient. Hundreds of hours of content, all free. Just be ready for a steep learning curve.
The Indie Surprises
Deadlock

Valve’s new MOBA-shooter hybrid is technically still in closed beta, but invites are so common now it might as well be F2P. The game is rough—no tutorial, UI is placeholder, balance is all over the place—but the core gameplay loop is addictive. Think Dota 2 meets Team Fortress 2 with a 1930s occult aesthetic.
No monetization yet because it’s beta, but knowing Valve, it’ll probably follow the Dota 2 model: all heroes free, cosmetics for sale. If you like MOBAs but hate sitting in lane for 15 minutes, this might be your thing.
Once Human

The post-apocalyptic survival MMO that dropped in July has found its footing. October’s seasonal update added fishing (because every survival game needs fishing) and some quality-of-life changes that make solo play less painful. The Cthulhu-meets-The-Division vibe is weird but works.
Monetization leans toward convenience items and cosmetics. Nothing egregious, though the inventory space limitations feel designed to sell you stash expansions. Still, you can play the entire game free without hitting hard paywalls.
What to Actually Avoid
Tower of Fantasy – Dead game. Move on.
Overwatch 2 – Blizzard somehow made Overwatch worse. Battle pass progression is glacial, queue times are long, and the PvE content they promised is basically canceled. Just play The Finals instead.
Anything published by Nexon – I’m not saying all their games are pay-to-win disasters, but I’m also not not saying that.
The Bottom Line
Steam’s F2P scene in October 2025 is healthier than it’s been in years. CS2 is solid, The Finals is fun, Lost Ark and Warframe keep delivering content, and even the gacha games are producing genuine quality alongside their monetization schemes.
